Colon and Rectal Cancer (colorectal cancer)

Established in 2005 europacolon is the first European organisation dedicated to colorectal cancer and it aims to unite patients, carers, healthcare professionals, politicians, the media and the public in the fight against the disease.

In today's world there are few families that have not been touched by cancer.  Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide (WHO 2004) and the biggest public health crisis facing Europe.  Colorectal cancer is the second biggest killer in Europe and yet it is highly treatable if it is diagnosed early! Detection through screening and treatment at an early stage of the disease can and will make a difference!

We are delighted to announce that our first Colorectal Cancer Screening Workshop held on the 18th March in Lisbon Portugal was a resounding success. After much debate all parties reached a concensus that Portugal should commence roll out of a formal population screening programme as soon as possible. First steps are being taken to set up a steering committee to support roll out. The full report on the meeting will be available on our website in July. A brief overview of the meeting is available in our European Colorectal Cancer News 2010. europacolon plans to roll out three additional screening workshops across Europe throughout the rest of this year.

To meet the needs of our European audiences we are very pleased to announce that the europacolon website is now available in all languages.  Watch this space as information on survivorship, participating in clinical trials plus diet and lifestyle is coming soon!
